Introducing 'The Modern Loss Handbook'
An interactive guide to moving through grief and building your resilience.
Hi everyone,
I'm thrilled to share that the book I wish I had no personal reason to write – The Modern Loss Handbook: An Interactive Guide to Moving Through Grief and Building Your Resilience – is available for preorder wherever books are sold. It will be published May 17 with Running Press, unless it sinks to the bottom of the ocean in transit (which actually happened earlier this year because #2022).
This is the thing I wish someone would have handed me in the years (yes, "s") after my own losses – primarily, my mom’s and dad’s deaths – and one which I would have easily purchased for someone else. It's equal parts task manager, idea catcher, inspiration, friend-you-can-scream-into-the-cosmic-void-to, sketchbook, tough love-giver, and memorial. And it's beautifully illustrated, to boot.
The book's goal is threefold: To help you stay connected to your person, help you stay connected to yourself, and help you stay connected to the world around you. Because when you manage to do all that, you can begin to write your own narrative – one that is unique to you and bends and shifts but still exists. And that acknowledgment creates a baseline of resilience, which simply means to be aware of possibility even while feeling complete devastation.
Below, I have an ask, and also an offer.
My ask: Please preorder this book. I wish they didn’t, because I care much more about the content of this book than the business of it, but preorders matter. They help publishers decide where and how else to make a book available. And they help booksellers (especially independent ones) decide that maybe they’ll order another copy if they have enough interest. Small actions matter when it comes to book publishing, and authors are working really hard in the lead-up to publication doing marketing, sales, and PR jobs that they didn't really sign up to do. Indiebound, Bookshop, your favorite indie or Amazon, it all works.
My offer: Everyone who preorders by 5/16 will receive a 3-month membership to our paid level, which includes unlimited expert-led sessions, peer-to-peer support in our closed group, etc. And it's valued at $24, which is more than the actual book price. If you’re already a paying member, your subscription will be extended. The best part? You can gift this membership to anyone, even if the book is for you; it's like giving someone a built-in support system.
This is very easy to do in two steps:
Thank you so much for reading, and for letting me share about this labor of love with our community. I hope you consider giving it a chance to help you or someone you care about.
More news soon.

It's one of the most thoughtful, HUMAN responses to a grieving person you can imagine. I plan to give this in tandem with the original MODERN LOSS book because they complement each other and give the grieving person a way to process in real time.
Also - the form won’t let me upload my proof of purchase, in fact it says file uploads have been disabled?.
